"Efforts in vain" - Wash out at Almondbury - 2nd August
07 August 2008
Slaithwaite were left frustrated at Almondbury on Saturday, having to settle for two points each, as they were beaten by the rain.
Unable to rely on our usual scribe, away on a "Stag" weekend, our First Team reported back to the Editor that they posted a more than useful total batting first on what was described as anything from a "sporting wicket" to the unprintable. The Welshman opened up (in the absence of the holiday duo, Dingle and Agent Keeling)
Along with Sir Geoff, both made good contributions, before FS steadied the ship through to close with 38 not out.
Sir Geoff reported back by phone at tea, telling the second X1 (who had rattled 251/5 at HQ against our friends from Golcar) "not to vorry, they will not be getting 60" He had also rung Mrs Vaghela to tell her to get the Taaka Dhal on the burner.
Sure enough they didn't, but rain fell and despite the remarkable efforts of the home side to mop up whilst remaining within the club house and our own Chopster managing to find a fork (from the kitchen?) but nothing to soak away the water, it was match abandoned. Is there any desire to play cricket down Fernside Avenue????
A disgruntled bunch returned to the evening sun at HQ, to watch the youthful Second X1 collect 5 points and keep the pressure on the league leaders.
